Images of Newburyport

By |2012-08-27T09:25:45+00:00August 27th, 2012|Markets, Newburyport|

I'm really fortunate to live in a pretty little seaside city on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Newburyport is a place that people talk about taking a day trip to, yet I get to 'day trip' here every day. During any season Newburyport has views worth boasting about, but here are some of my favorites for late summer. There is boardwalk access right across the street from my house. The boardwalk runs along the river all the way into downtown, and this is the scenery along the way. Cider Hill Farm in Amesbury is just a short drive - or scooter ride - away. Once I get there I'm treated to the sight of their amazing [...]

No complacency

By |2010-08-10T15:18:00+00:00August 10th, 2010|marathon, Newburyport|

Not so much a post about travel today...more about a journey. I've never understood why January 1st is supposed to be the start of everything better and new.  We all have our own built-in New Year...it happens on our birthday. Today is my birthday...I guess this one marks what is possibly the mid-point of my life.  I can't even believe it as I write it.  How did this happen?? I've been fortunate over the years to have traveled extensively and I have appreciated every opportunity I've been given to do so.  When my time is my own in a couple of years I hope to get to many of the places I've yet to see.  Volunteer [...]

Dummerston VT Apple Pie Festival

By |2010-08-02T09:05:34+00:00August 2nd, 2010|Food and Drink, USA, Vermont|

Always held on the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend.  The Dummerston Congregational Church at the intersection of East West Road and Middle Road.  The pie selling starts at 10:30 am and goes until they're sold out.  Make sure to get there early and not be disappointed! Autumn in Vermont is summed up by the Dummerston Apple Pie Festival.  The town square, anchored by the Congregational Church, is surrounded by several white colonial style houses with large front porches.  Trees with various shades of fall color are all around. Traffic is thick on this holiday weekend in October and there is an inordinate amount of motorcycles. The smell of apples in many forms;  fresh, baked in pies, [...]

Review : Duckfat in Portland, Maine

By |2010-07-26T19:54:01+00:00July 26th, 2010|Maine, Portland, Restaurants, USA|

Duckfat www.duckfat.com 43 Middle St. Portland, Maine If you're a french fry fan you NEED to get to Duckfat.  Located in Portland, Maine it's a small upscale sandwich type shop located just a few blocks from the Old Port area.  Duckfat serves up lunch and dinner 7 days a week.  Soups, sandwiches and THE most amazing french (actually belgian) fries around.  Cooked in duckfat, they are the perfect color and crispness.  Served with a choice of sauces, but definitely try the truffle ketchup.  Wine and beer served too.   And don't miss the milkshakes! photo:  duckfat.com

High On Ketchikan

By |2010-07-20T20:47:57+00:00July 20th, 2010|Adventure Travel, Cruises, Ketchikan|

"There has got to be a way down", I thought to myself as I stood on a platform high in the treetops.  Looking around, all I could see was the swinging log in front of me.  Everyone in front of me had traversed the log without incident, but I knew as soon as I stepped out onto it the cable above to which I was strapped would snap and I would fall to my death.  The people behind me had no such fears and were all urging me to "get going already!"  The last time I'd felt such paralyzing fear was several years ago when I'd gone sky-diving to impress a boy.  That 'boy' is now [...]

One Night in Boston

By |2010-07-13T18:41:09+00:00July 13th, 2010|Boston, Food and Drink, Lounges, Massachusetts, Newburyport, Restaurants|

Living so close to Boston, it's unusual for me to actually spend the night there.  On Thursday, Dan and I used a free hotel night at the Sheraton Boston.  This is not your parent's hotel!  Sheraton recently renovated all of their properties and it shows.  From the free samples of Starbuck's Frappuccino in the lobby to the soothing brown and green decor in the room to the oversize photos of Boston landmarks throughout, it's a very comfortable place to spend the night. With just one night in town we had to make it count.  First stop was Bukowski's, conveniently located practically out the front door of the hotel.  Not for food this time (but the pub [...]

Mani-Pedi’s While You Wait

By |2010-07-05T07:32:52+00:00July 5th, 2010|Airports, Canada, Girlfriend Getaways, USA|

We all hate waiting.  Waiting in traffic, waiting in line at the grocery store, waiting for a connecting flight at an airport.  In this day of  'go, go, go!' it just feels like wasted time.  The trick is to turn the time into a treat and use it for something that you don't normally make time for.  In my real life I never get a manicure.  Mostly because I just don't have that block of time available to go to the salon, get the manicure and wait for it to dry.  Wait, did I say 'wait'?  Next time you have some downtime at an airport check out one of these terminal spas. New Orleans April 2009

By |2009-04-29T15:07:13+00:00April 29th, 2009|Girlfriend Getaways, Louisiana, New Orleans, Shopping|

New Orleans  April 2009 Ah, a girl's weekend in New Orleans!  I've done a few of these over the years, and I never get tired of it.  New Orleans is a crazy place;  sometimes crazier than others, but always interesting.  I've been there with boyfriends, girlfriends, marathon runners, and had a fantastic time every time. This weekend was girl's only.  5 of us for some food and fun.  Unfortunately, I got a bit left behind and arrived a day late...not mentioning any particular airline's name, but NEVER FLY THROUGH NEWARK!!  I managed to get myself there by noon on Saturday however, and quickly made up for lost time.  After a bonus celebrity sighting, I met Lori [...]
