it doesn't snow often in Paris, but when it does it's a sight to behold.
I revisited one of my favorite food items today...fromage fort. I have concocted this in the past, but have let it sort of fall by the wayside in recent years. I was walking through the local market this afternoon looking for some lunch when I stumbled upon a vendor with a huge vat of this amazing stuff. I didn't get a picture of it...as usual I was so excited about the food I forgot to document it. But I bought a (relatively) small amount to bring home and enjoy with some baguette. Being the cheese freak that I am, this is just heaven on a baguette. Every fromage fort is different. This one [...]
Paris' Marchés aux Puces are fairly well known. They're somewhat of an institution and can be an entertaining way to spend an hour (or more) off the beaten tourist path. The largest, Les Puces de Saint-Ouen, is located at the very northernmost part of the city. But it can be a bit overwhelming, so my favorite to visit is the Puces de Vanves. It's a great size, lots to see, doesn't take up your entire day and has a nice, neighborhood feel to it. Pick a Saturday or Sunday and make the trek. It was a cold, damp Sunday when I headed to Porte de Vanves. The rain didn't seem to dampen the spirited exchange of [...]
A big part of my visit to Paris is about the food. I'm sort of a foodie freak anyway, and a lot of the traditional French foods are tops on my list. In no particular order here are some of them: Un croissant. Flaky, buttery, slightly crispy on the outside, melt-in-your-mouth on the inside. Is there anything more French than a croissant? Soupe à l'oignon gratinée. Warm, savory and topped with croutons and melted cheese. If they try to serve it to you any other way, be disappointed. Goes perfectly with une verre de vin rouge. Un crepe avec jambon et fromage. Ham and and melted cheese folded inside a thin pancake. The perfect takeaway lunch. [...]
I might be a bit obsessed with the Eiffel Tower here in Paris. Every time I catch a glimpse of it across the river or around a corner I can't help feeling a little thrill. To me, the structure is what I think of when I think of Paris. I can't even believe how lucky I am that I get to see this amazing sight every day while I'm here...enjoy these images! Up close and personal Seems to grow right out of the ground A little artistic license Truly, around every corner Sunset colors in the background The grand finale
After months - well, to be honest, years - of thinking and planning, I'm living my dream. I'm hanging out in Paris for a total of 2 months. Living like a local, renting an apartment, eating pain au chocolat and stinky cheese (not at the same time) and loving it. I spent the first few days just walking aimlessly around the city, re-acquainting myself with the orientation of everything. And I mean walk! The day after I arrived I logged almost 15 miles on foot and have been averaging 9 a day since. I haven't yet set foot on a Metro, despite the cold temps. All of these photos were taken on the first evening I [...]
I've been thinking and talking about it for as long as I can remember..'I want to go to Paris for an extended stay and pretend I live there'. Well, it's going to happen. I leave my home on February 4, and from February 5 through April 2 I'll call Paris home. I've got lists galore about what to bring, what not to bring, arrangements I need to take care of before I leave, cat instructions for my husband. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. I've been to Paris many times before, but this time will be different. Aside from a handful of family and friends who have already committed to visiting I'll be on [...]
My impending freedom from the work world is getting closer every day (less than 2 years away!), and the plan for what happens after that has changed form many times. Volunteer? Work part time somewhere? Write that book? Travel has been the only constant. Anyone who knows me probably knows that if I could choose anywhere to be it would be Paris. I've been fortunate enough to travel there many times and for some extended periods of time. While I've been thinking about what I will do when I have the time to do it, Paris keeps creeping back into my thoughts. I can be happy for hours walking through the streets of Paris marveling at [...]
